Earth day was one of the most important environmental teach-ins in American history. In the 1970s people started to become more aware of their environmental surroundings. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin came up with the idea of Earth Day after witnessing the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Earth Day was a nationwide teach-in held on April, 22 1970 to raise environmental awareness. This teach-in united many different groups of environmentalists. The whole nation was united from politicians to scientists to students. It raised awareness for the first time of the right to a clean environment and the responsibility to keep it clean for ourselves and future generations. People learned how the environment was being damaged by the burning of fossil fuels, industrialization, and emissions from vehicles, etc. They learned that it was their responsibility to stop this damage from further happening, and they had the responsibility to keep this Earth habitable for future generations. They learned that by damaging their environment and over using resources, they were violating the rights of the future generations. The First Earth Day led to many environment protection laws and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
"The fight for a clean environment continues in a climate of increasing urgency, as the ravages of climate change become more manifest every day. We invite you to be a part of Earth Day and help write many more victories and successes into our history."(Earth Day Network, 2013)
